Spring is upon us! For most people that means birds and bees and flowers in the
trees - for us it means unexpected rains, cold fronts and turbulence! What better
way to experience ever-changing weather but to fly into and out of small island
airports with scarcely any landing aids, short runways and approaches to befuddle
the mind! The Hellenic virtual Area Control
Center dares you to join us for the continuation of our Small Airports events
series and fly between Chios, Samos and Kos!
Chios, an island of 904 sq.
km. and 54000 inhabitants boasts amazing vistas, beautiful beaches and something
to do for everyone! We will skip the facts about the hundreds of different orchids
that grow on the island and the fabled "mastiha", the minty tree resin that can
be found only on this island and go right for the aviation interest: The airport, named after Homer, opened in 1969. The runway is
1511 m. long (or short!) and 30 wide with a north - south orientation. A big mountainous
mass to the northwest makes the approach tricky, so study the charts!
Samos, to the south, is connected with so many myths and fables that it would be
impossible to even list them here. Read all about it here and then prepare for one of the most difficult approaches
in Europe. The runway
is oriented east - west and is 2100 meters long - it has to be, because few can
touch down "on the numbers"! The procedure brings you as close as it can, then it's
up to you. Be prepared.
Kos, further
south, is a well known island, a favorite of tourists worldwide. Crystalline waters,
excellent facilities, sea and sun make it ideal as a summer destination. We say
summer, but hundreds of charter flights start pouring in as early as
March! This makes the "Hippocrates" airport an international port of entry and the
high workload is lightened only by the amenable location of the airport.
So, be prepared for the unexpected and come fly with us. We dare you!
